Homeowners Avoid Cash Rate Hike, but Stress on Energy Costs Hits Record High
Finder.com.au - 01 Aug. 23
In this month's Finder RBA Cash Rate Survey, 43 experts and economists weighed in on future cash rate moves and other issues relating to the state of the economy. The majority of panellists (72%, 31/43) correctly predicted the cash rate would hold in August at 4.10%. This is the third meeting that has resulted in a hold since the RBA began raising the rate in May of 2022. With the value and number of new owner occupier loans increasing steadily since February, 3 in 4 experts (73%, 19/26) do not expect this to be the start of a new housing boom cycle. Dale Gillham from Wealth Within said the rising cash rate would limit property price growth. "I don't think we have seen the full effects of interest rate rises just yet and indeed the last of the rises. Investors are leaving the market, especially in Victoria with new taxes coming into play. Whilst pockets will rise, I think broadly Australian housing will be flat for the next few years," Gillham said...

CommSec Launches New International Share Trading Platform
Savings.com.au - 31 Jul. 23
A Capgemini Research Institute survey in April of 10,000 Aussies found more than half of all respondents would trust artificial intelligence to help with their financial planning. There's plenty of AI powered tools for investors already out there, like Alpha from investing platform Public or FinChat, a chatbot that can provide verified data on public companies designed to help investors make decisions. However, Dale Gillham, Chief Analyst of financial services company Wealth Within, maintains traders should still not be outsourcing all their decisions to algorithims. "Relying on AI can provide traders with a false sense of security leading them to make poor money management decisions and taking on higher risks," Mr Gillham said. "Don’t get me wrong, AI is likely to be able to assist humans, but it’s not a substitute, particularly when the stock market is an emotional barometer of human activity. The success of anyone trading the stock market comes down to taking a balanced approach that combines aspects of AI with human knowledge, skill and experience...

72% Forecast A Rate Hold, Say Mortgage Stress Is Yet to Peak
Michael Yardney's Property Update - 28 Jul. 23
PropertyUpdate.com.au featured Dale Gillham's expert commentary in their Property Market News. Following lower than expected CPI inflation figures for the June quarter, many economists are tipping another rate pause from the RBA. Finder's monthly survey of the nation’s experts found they are predicting another cash rate hold in August following lower-than-expected inflation figures. In this month’s Finder RBA Cash Rate Survey, 43 experts and economists weighed in on future cash rate moves and other issues relating to the state of the economy. The majority of panellists (29/43, 67%) believe the RBA will hold the cash rate at 4.10% in August, leaving less than 1 in 3 (28%, 12/43) predicting an increase. Dale Gillham, chief analyst of Wealth Within commented as follows "According to the ABS CPI rose 0.8% in the last quarter, so whilst CPI is down on a yearly basis, I suspect it is not coming down as fast as the RBA might like. Given this and looking at what other countries are doing, they may start to take a more aggressive approach...

Tech Pulls Down ASX as a Possible Bearish Period Awaits
Investing.com - 21 Jul. 23
A tech sell off today has seen the ASX tumble. The S&P/ASX 200 dropped 0.4%, or 27.6 points, to 7297.4 by lunchtime. Technology was down 2.9%, led by Xero Limited which lost 3.76% in morning trade. In the green were Energy up 0.87% and Consumer Staples 1.00% higher. On the small cap front, the S&P/ASX Small Ordinaries had lost 0.75% at lunch time in what was a quiet morning. Wealth Within chief analyst Dale Gillham believes the market will move away from the current flat period. “After a very strong rise last week, any reasonable person would think the market would continue to be bullish this week. But so far, the All Ordinaries Index has been rather flat up just 0.33% as of writing, with Wednesday the only real bullish day to date. The good news is that the All Ordinaries Index has traded up to 7,958 points, which is its highest level since February 17, although what is more important is where it will close this week...

How Did Aussie Exquities Fare in FY22-23?
Money Management Powered by FE - 10 Jul. 23
Technology was the leader in the last financial year while energy and materials, which make up half the ASX 200, saw difficulty. Over the 12 months to 30 June, the ASX 200 rose 9.7 per cent which added $276 billion in market capitalisation to bring the ASX 200 to $2.4 trillion, a record high. Seven of the last 12 months saw positive performance from the index. All 11 of the ASX’s sectors reported positive returns but technology was the stand-out winner with returns of 37 per cent over the period. Dale Gillham, chief analyst at Wealth Within said: “The tech sector has been dominant, especially over the last eight months, it has really outstripped the market. But it is a really small sector, less than 2 per cent of the ASX as we only have a few big tech companies like Xero and Wisetech. It is a sector in its infancy. “Tech won’t be the stand-out next year, it will slow down. The sector got overheated and people were chasing returns and jumping on news which was pushing up prices...
